It’s Sugaring Time!

Visit the Brooksvale Sugar Shack
February 12, 2022 – March 9, 2022
Wednesdays 3:00 – 5:00pm
Saturdays 11:00 – 1:00pm
Sugarmaker Pete is monitoring the short-term weather forecasts and soon we will tap the Park’s maple trees and begin boiling the sap to make maple syrup.
We’re in our 22nd year of sugaring at Brooksvale Park. Hamden Recreation and DPW – Parks Division staff work together to collect and boil the sap.
We invite the public to visit the sugar shack on Wednesdays from 3:00 – 5:00pm or Saturdays from 11:00 – 1:00pm. See how the sap from the park’s Sugar Maple trees is turned into syrup.
In addition, join us THIS Saturday Feb 12 at 11am for Tapping Day. Learn how Pete manages our sugarbush and taps the trees. Meet at the sugar shack.
Also, we hope to see you Saturday March 19, from 10:00 – 2:00pm for Maple Sugaring Open House Day. The Friends of Brooksvale will be teaching visitors about our sugarbush and will partner with us to bottle our syrup. A limited supply of 2022 Brooksvale Maple Syrup will be available for a donation on that day. ALL proceeds go directly back into educational programming at the park and the sugaring operation.

Can’t get enough!

Skated again today. I can only stay indoors downloading photos and writing emails and such for so long.. What a gorgeous day. Ranger Vinny had cleared some of the pond with the Gator but didn’t want to go out too far until he checked the ice depth. Needing exercise, I offered to shovel some of the snow that covered the pond last night. And I met some new little friends too!

Skating Season

Did you dream of being Peggy Fleming like I did? Or are Nathan Chen or Alysa Liu more your speed? No matter who you’d like to skate like, or what team you root for (can you say Bruins?) or even if it’s your first time skating, we wanted to let you know Ice Skating on the pond at Brooksvale is back! You can skate during daylight hours only. Call the park office first to be sure conditions are okay (203-287-2669) or follow FOB Inc. on Facebook and we’ll post when the Ranger gives us an update. Remember, there are no rentals at the park, bring your own skates. Drive slow past the big red barn up to the Veterans’ Memorial Building to park. Helmets (bike helmets work great on kids) are suggested for safety. Great deals on gently used skates can be found at Goodwill and Salvation Army and of course new ones online, at Dick’s Sporting goods and elsewhere. Skate sharpening for about $10 bucks can be done right at Hamden Sports Center on Whitney. Tell Matt I sent you!
